Excavation
Excavations only occur with explicit approval and support from DPAA. Excavations typically take place after at least one investigation has taken place at a site. Once in the field, the CRIM teams work in conjunction with the local community, government officials, local archaeologists, and other partners. Excavations are done with the intent of finding human remains and material evidence that supports correlation of a site to a specific incident and evidence that supports identification of those remains.
Led by a Lead Archaeologist (an individual with substantial field experience and who has gone through DPAA training), excavations often take place in challenging locations. Our teams may work on mountain sides or beaches, in jungles with dense vegetation and potentially dangerous fauna, or the side of busy roads. This diversity in settings requires our archaeologists to be knowledgeable, technically savvy, and creative in order to successfully excavate these sites.
